Hello hello -
I’m writing to you from the middle of downtown Portland, from my little room on our bus. The vibes here are askew only in that we didn’t get to finish our set in the name of safety/due to lightning. I’m so glad we got to do most of the show but obviously it’s frustrating to have to abandon a set before it's over. To the audience today: you were so amazing and you deserved a complete performance. I won’t forget it and we will hopefully be together again soon. Thank you for showing up early, thank you for bringing so much energy. It was a mad dash at the end but up until that point we were having the time of our lives up there.
What else do I have to tell you about? Toody Cole called me “kiddo” twice today which was huge for me. It was an honor to have her on the bill. I’ve been a Dead Moon fan since I was a teenager. We also have loved getting to do a few shows with our friends Woods. Tomorrow we play the Seattle Zoo with them which after an abrupt ending to our set today, I truly cannot wait for. If you missed us together out west and/or you live on the East Coast, I believe there are a few tickets left to the Beacon in NYC, but truly only a few! Get ‘em quick.
A couple of weeks ago Futurebirds put out their new album on which I have a little feature. I was with Brad when he first got the demos for the album, before they had any real plans to work together. He put them on, we were deep in conversation, and we both kept stopping to comment on how great the songs were. Many months later, the album had been tracked at Sonic Ranch (just a few months after we made Tigers Blood in the same room), and Brad had me do an impromptu harmony over what became the title track of the record. I couldn’t get the song out of my head for weeks after that and I’m having the same experience with the entire album now. It kind of reminds me of being 19 in Tuscaloosa in the best way. Back then everyone around me had impeccably amazing taste but like, also loved Alabama football and Natty Light and smoking Camel Crushes. The lyrics are very people-in-their-30s-will-relate which is all I’m after these days. The melodies are some of the catchiest I’ve heard in forever. Anyways. I love the album and highly recommend checking it out if you haven’t. My friend/Alabama legend Patterson Hood also has a feature. So good.
I popped into Frances May earlier, which might be my favorite shop in America. The jury’s out but I would definitely say it's in my top 5. I purchased a few additions to my little TB capsule wardrobe. I’m thrilled to share that I’ve really dialed in the vibe after Europe and I cannot wait to unleash a few new looks onto my midwestern and East Coast showgoers. A few non-stage-wardrobe acquisitions of late include some coffee for the bus from Sey, some clogs by Gardenheir and some matcha and magnesium from Wooden Spoon Herbs. Fun fact! Lauren Haynes who founded Wooden Spoon and I have been friends since we were teenagers. We used to drink cheap beer and get into some mischief together. Now she texts me wellness tips whilst I’m on the road. I’m sure a lot of y’all are fans of her offerings but for the uninitiated, she’s a genius and an angel. I’m not even being paid to say that, I love everything she makes and use many of her creations daily.
What else? I’m late to the party but if you don’t subscribe to my friend, confidante and drummer Spencer Tweedy’s substack well you should! It’s fun to both document our different experiences of the same tour. He’s a brilliant writer and while I’m new to his newsletter (I’m loving it so far) I can say he’s a great thinker and conversationalist and person AND keeper of the tempo every single damn night. What a guy. Check it out.
I think that’s about all I have for you! We were on Jimmy Kimmel’s show a few nights ago which was very fun. I wore Bode. Jeff Goldblum was the guest host. Link to watch here. A few photos below. One by my dear friend Anna St. Louis (who we miss so very much!) and the rest by yours truly.
Tour rolls along! Having an absolute blast so far! Get your tickets!
