Greetings from Pittsburgh, PA
I woke up at 12:30 pm today which is a feat for me! Aspirational. I tell my late-sleeping bandmates I’m going to change my ways and join in on their pursuit of rest all the time but I seldom actually do. I opened my window and saw college kids in hammocks and a life-size statue of a diplodocus in a birthday hat. Every morning Ernestine and I walk to find a coffee and today we got to walk over one of those beautiful wrought iron bridges you see and just think of Pittsburgh.
The last week of shows has been so amazing. We really made it from west to east in record time. It was cool to experience so many regions so quickly, things changing daily. I feel like I had 4 different locally-beloved kinds of pizza in a week. I saw my dear friend Nathaniel Rateliff’s show at Red Rocks which was pretty unbelievable in a myriad of ways and it’s stayed on my mind. I love his new record and if you get the chance to see him soon, take it! I sang a song with the Futurebirds which was a blast. It was a perfect Red Rocks night. We played Fort Collins the next night, a first for me, which was low key amazing. It was really soothing and correct to bring my predominately midwestern band/crew back to the Midwest as well. St. Louis, Madison and Kalamazoo were all different but shared an energy we appreciated and loved and felt very at home in.
That about brings us up to date. Tomorrow we have the day off in NYC which means that Peyton, Clay, Colin and myself are going to see the first round of the US Open. I’m so excited. My mom plays tennis and has played almost my entire life. Kevin also plays and is responsible for finally explaining the rules to me in a way that I was able to retain and I now celebrate the sport pretty passionately. Last year I identified Coco Gauff in the first round of the Open as my very favorite player and I cried like a baby when she won the whole thing. I love sports, I’ve spoken about it a lot on this blog, but tennis is almost a different thing entirely. The mental game and the intimacy and the discipline and the inherent conflict. There’s a darkness to it that I love. I’m thrilled to catch a couple of matches whilst I’m in town.
On Wednesday we play the Beacon Theatre. I’m not typically super sentimental about playing certain venues but I will say I’ve wanted to play the Beacon for as long as I can remember. It’s really THE New York venue I’ve always wanted to do. I feel so honored to finally be able to do it and I appreciate y’all buying tickets and selling it out. I saw Lucinda do Car Wheels on a Gravel Road in its entirety there and met her for the first time backstage. It’s a special place.
Later this week we join up with my friends Tim Heidecker and Lindsey Jordan aka Snail Mail and we finish out this section of tour all together. It’s going to be wild and fun. Get your tickets here. We announced an Australian tour, which I am really happy about. I haven’t been since 2018 and I truly can’t wait to bring this show down there. Tickets here. Last but not least, we’re doing the Anti showcase at Americana Fest in a few weeks. I think we’re playing Tigers Blood front to back with Jake Lenderman sitting in. The lineup is truly crazy. Tickets for that here.
I’ll leave y’all with a few photos from the last week or so. XOXO.
