Hello, good morning -
I’m writing to you from a ship in the sea (Caribbean) somewhere near the Northern coast of Cuba. It’s difficult to say where exactly because the wifi is spotty & the map is unclear which really does add an element of drama to even the more mundane aspects of my day to day.
I don’t have a ton to tell you or to say except a few random tidbits that have been swimming around in my mind. I’ve been thinking a lot about passages from Sally Rooney’s last book recently so I just thought I’d share about it. The thing I really love about that book is the email exchange that occurs throughout between two of the more intellectually-agile characters I can think of in recent memory. They discuss politics and culture and I just find the writing and the takes to be uncannily relatable and engaging but very authentically expressed. It came out a few years ago and I know all the girlies read it then but I highly recommend picking it back up. In a moment of loneliness on a boat in the ocean it’s proving to be a stimulating companion.
I feel inundated with very good new music (Beyonce, Jessica Pratt) but 2 artists have released things I can’t stop listening to. The first just put out a couple singles, both of which are great and one of which I simply cannot stop singing. Her name is Brennan Wedl and the song is “2 Dollar Pistol” - have you heard it? Go listen to it if not. It’s catchy, it’s country, it’s 90s, it’s just so many things that I love & you know it’s just FUN. I’m loving it. Lindsey Jordan showed me her song “I Wanna Be Your TV” a few months ago and I’ve been such a fan ever since. I can’t wait to hear the rest of what I assume is an album being rolled out.
The other artist I want to talk about and I weirdly think y’all are gonna guess this one before I even type it because my assumption is that you are also obsessed … is Hurray For the Riff Raff’s new record “The Past Is Still Alive”. Are you guys listening? There’s no way some of you aren’t. The album is in constant rotation for so many of my close friends. It’s addictive. It’s a religion. I cannot stop thinking about the songs and playing them in my head & having a new favorite every day. Alynda and I go way back. We’ve toured together & have a song out in the world together & I really love their music a lot already but don’t think of me as biased in this case! This album is objectively special. I feel like one of my favorite songwriters just made their best record yet. Lucky me.
And that is pretty much all I have! Eliana and I are going to play some songs on this cruise later today. We’re excited to play a bunch of the new songs & this whole excursion has us feeling so so so so SO pumped to finally get the band together and play the record for you in a few months. We’re coming to so many cities with truly phenomenal openers, I really just can’t wait for it.
